If there’s one place on Earth that beautifully encapsulates the essence of Mediterranean allure, it’s the island of Capri. Located off the Sorrentine Peninsula in Italy, Capri is a paradise of stunning landscapes, luxury boutiques, delicious cuisine, and rich history. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff, a food lover, or just want to go because it’s famous, there’s something for everyone in Capri. Below, you will find 10 amazing things you can do in Capri for a day, but first, let’s get there.
Getting To Capri for a Day Trip
The only way to get to Capri is by sea. Plan to depart the mainland early for your Capri in a day trip so that you can enjoy everything on this list.
You can catch a ferry to Capri from various towns along the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples. I personally took the ferry that left from Sorrento. Some key departure points include:
- Naples: The main port with frequent ferry services to Capri.
- Sorrento: A popular departure point on the Sorrentine Peninsula.
- Amalfi: Connects Capri with the Amalfi Coast.
- Positano: Offers ferry services to Capri, connecting two picturesque destinations.
You can also look into a private transfer if you want a more posh experience. If you are too super excited to get there and can’t wait another minute, you can take a High-Speed Boat (hydrofoils). These boats operate out of Naples and Sorrento. For more information on ferries and boats, please visit here.
Arriving to Capri
Whether you board a ferry from Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, or Positano, the journey to Capri reveals breathtaking coastal scenery, vibrant buildings, and the iconic Faraglioni rocks. Upon reaching Marina Grande, the main port, visitors are greeted by stunning, bright architecture, the island’s bustling energy, and friendly locals. Arriving in Capri for a day trip will seem like a dream. I even had to venture back a couple more times to make sure.
Getting around Capri
Buses
If you are looking for an affordable option, the buses will be for you. Buses will take you from Capri to Anacapri and all of the attractions listed in this post.
Funicular
This is a fun option. It’s a cable car that takes you from Marina Grande to Piazzetta. These cable cars are pretty efficient and run every 15 minutes. It’s a 4-minute trip to Piazzetta.
Taxis
An excellent choice if you are looking for comfort and convenience. It’s always nice to have a private driving. Plus, why not spoil yourself and not have to wait for buses that may be jam-packed.
Capri For A Day
I really don’t even know where to begin! It’s so exciting just being there, but there is lots to do, so let’s get started with the list.
1. Visit Villa San Michele: One of my favorite things to do in Capri for a day is to visit this historic villa that was the former residence of Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe. Munthe was a skilled physician and a lover of art and beauty. As a doctor, he had a deep sense of empathy for all living beings, which is reflected in the villa’s gardens. He had a dream of building a home that would merge with the natural beauty of Capri, and Villa San Michele is the manifestation of that dream. Perched on a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples, visitors can explore beautiful gardens embellished with classical sculptures, enjoy panoramic views, and discover artifacts collected by Munthe.
2. Gardens of Augustus: Perched on a terraced hillside, these lush gardens offer panoramic views of the iconic Faraglioni rock formations and the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The view of the rocks from the gardens is nothing short of mesmerizing. The Gardens of Augustus, known as Giardini di Augusto in Italian, are a natural wonder and a historical gem. Named after the Roman Emperor Augustus, who resided in Capri, they were initially known as Krupp Gardens. The gardens are a testament to the island’s rich history and cultural heritage, offering a glimpse into the past while being a paradise for nature lovers. It would be an experience you would cherish forever.
3. Ride the Monte Solaro chairlift: This is one of the best things you can do in Capri for a day trip. This chairlift is an amazing experience. The views are literally out of this world. The Monte Solaro chairlift is an exhilarating way to reach the highest point on the island of Capri, Anacapri (meaning “above” Capri). The journey takes you to the summit of Monte Solaro, where you can admire the breathtaking views and the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It’s a memorable experience offering a birds-eye perspective of Capri. This experience is highly recommended for visitors.
4. Visit Anacapri: Enjoy the serene town after taking the Monte Solaro chairlift up to Anacapri. This is where you will find Villa San Michele and Chiesa di San Michele. Anacapri provides a more tranquil atmosphere compared to Capri Town, and the views are incredible.
5. Visit the Blue Grotto: Known as Grotta Azzurra in Italian, it is only accessible by boat, offering an adventure even before you reach the main attraction. It is a sea cave that truly embodies the phrase “hidden gem.” Visitors enter through a low opening, a journey that may seem daunting, but the reward on the other side is truly worth it. Once inside, you are welcomed by a world that seems entirely removed from reality, bathed in a vibrant blue light that captivates everyone. The magical illumination, which might seem like a trick of the eye, is created by sunlight passing through an underwater cavity. The sunlight penetrates the water, reflecting off the white sandy bottom and through the water surface, creating an intense azure hue. This phenomenon can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Don’t pass this one up. (There tends to be long wait times to see this, but it’s well worth it if you’re willing to commit to the wait.)
6. Take a boat tour around the island: This is truly one great way to see the Island of Capri. If you enjoy being on the water, this is a must-do for you. As you sail around the island, you will be treated to stunning views of the coastlines, the surrounding seas, and the impressive cliffs. You will also get a unique perspective of the famous Faraglioni rock formations and the enchanting Blue Grotto. It’s a remarkable way to take in the beauty of Capri. Finding yourself on the Island of Capri, don’t miss out on the chance to take a boat tour.
7. Chiesa di San Michele: This is a historic church built in the 17th century. Despite its relatively modest size compared to Italy’s more grandiose structures, it holds a significant place in the country’s cultural and architectural history. The church still retains its charming, centuries-old character, offering a glimpse into the architectural style and craftsmanship of the period. One of the most distinguishing features of the Chiesa di San Michele is its majolica-tiled floor. The vivid, colorful tiles breathe life into the biblical scene, making it a captivating sight for visitors.
8. Visit the Lighthouse of Punta Carena: This lighthouse stands proudly on Capri’s western tip. It offers breathtaking sea views. Visit for stunning sunsets and maritime charm.
9. Go Shopping: Beyond Capri’s natural beauty and historical sites, it offers another irresistible attraction – shopping. Capri offers exquisite shopping experiences, especially in Capri Town. When it comes to shopping in Capri, two streets stand out – Via Camerelle and Via Tragara. Here, you will find a concentration of designer labels and where high fashion meets Italian style. Capri Town is a haven for high-end fashion, handcrafted sandals, and unique local crafts.
10. Enjoy Italian Cuisine: Enjoy Italian Cuisine: Capri is known for its traditional Italian cuisine, which is deeply rooted in its history and culture. Whether you are into pasta or fresh seafood, you will not be disappointed in the least. I may be pretty biased about Italian cuisine because I literally love Italian food, possibly more than life! However, one of the highlights of Capri’s culinary scene is the homemade pasta, freshly made each day. Whether it’s the classic spaghetti tossed in a rich tomato sauce, the delicate ravioli stuffed with fresh cheese, or the hearty lasagna layered with meat and cheese, the pasta dishes in Capri are simply divine.
Seafood is another major highlight of Capri’s dining scene. Given its location in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the island has an abundant supply of fresh seafood, which plays a significant role in its cuisine. From prawns and clams to fresh fish and octopus, the seafood dishes in Capri are as fresh as they are delicious. The seafood dishes are prepared simply yet full of flavor, allowing the natural taste of the seafood to shine through. YUM!
Relax
Visiting Capri in a day can be exhausting; with so many things to knock off the list, you’re bound for some R&R. Enjoy relaxing in the main square, Pizzaetta. Take in people watching, watch the child laughing while kicking around a soccer ball, and immerse yourself in the sounds of everything around you: the language, the conversations, the views, the seagulls….it’s Capri, and it’s amazing!
