Florence To Siena Day Trip: 10 Must-Know Things
Dive in below to find out what 10 things you need to know for your amazing day trip to Siena. I’m confident that this list will help you to have a great day while visiting Siena!
- Transportation Options: You have three options to get you to Siena from Florence, which are all straightforward. You can take a regional train or a bus or drive (rent) a car. I give further detail below on all three options.
- Cultural Events: If you are lucky enough to be in Siena on July 2 or August 16 of any year, you will get to see one of the most famous Siena events, Palio di Siena. This is a famous horse race that takes place in the beautiful Piazza del Campo. I unfortunately was a bit too early on my first visit. However, I did get to see the participants practicing for it! Palio di Siena brings forth everyone in the community as everyone gets involved. This horse race is about neighborhoods (contrade) competing against each other. It truly is a must-see if you can make it. I was fortunate enough on my second trip there to see it!!! If you plan to visit during the holidays, you’ll be able to enjoy Christmas Markets and Festivities. Explore the Christmas markets, where you can find local gifts, excellent cuisine, and a very joyous atmosphere. Another event worth mentioning are the Medieval Festivals. Siena holds several of these events during various times throughout the year. These Medieval Festivals include reenactments, costumed parades, and traditional music and dance performances. If you find this of interest, it is best to check out Siena’s tourist information site to see when these events may be held, as there are no specific days for these. There are other local events that you may find of interest. It never hurts to look up what may be happening when you plan your day trip. I highly recommend going to Siena’s tourism page.
- Siena’s attractions: Piazza del Campo “Il Campo”– this is one of Europe’s most historic medieval squares. It is still a gathering place for locals and visitors. It offers great people-watching, too, if you’re into that! Siena Cathedral “Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta” – this is one of Italy’s incredible Gothic cathedrals. If you go to the bell tower, you will set eyes on the most beautiful panoramic views of Siena and the countryside. I spent a significant amount of time visiting Siena Cathedral, as it was just so breathtaking. Palazzo Pubblico – this is located in Piazza del Campo. Construction was started on this in 1267, and it took several years to complete. Palazzo Pubblico has a rich history, stunning architecture, and cultural significance, making it a key attraction for visitors exploring the city’s treasures. You will get an opportunity to see period work of frescos and other artwork that reflects the political and cultural aspirations of Siena. Adjacent to the Palazzo Pubblico is the Torre del Mangia. This is a 102m bell tower that also offers breathtaking panoramic views of Siena and the countryside.
- Public Holidays: Along with traditional holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, and Easter, Siena celebrates other holidays. These include Liberation Day in Tuscany in Siena ( April 25, 2024), Republic Day in Tuscany in Siena (June 2, 2024), Feast of the Assumption (August 15, 2024), Ferragosto in Tuscany in Siena (August 15, 2024), and Saint Stephen’s Day (December 26)
- Visit on a weekday instead of a weekend: As anywhere is, visiting during the week always provides you with fewer crowds and fewer lines. It’s an opportunity to enjoy yourself more without the excessive number of visitors in town.
- Walking tour routes: Consider joining a guided tour for a more in-depth understanding of Siena’s history and culture. This can enhance your overall experience.
- Wear comfortable shoes: I can’t say this enough…wear comfortable shoes! You will be doing a ton of walking, and there’s never anything worse than sore feet inside uncomfortable footwear. I will admit that one of the most comfortable traveling shoes I swear by is
