Rome to Lake Como
If you’re seeking an escape from the bustling pace of Rome and yearning for the tranquility of Lake Como, you’ve got three excellent choices for your journey.
Train
This happens to be the most popular option amongst travelers. Taking a high-speed train gives you the opportunity to sit back, relax, and enjoy the passing scenery.
Car
As the second most popular option, renting a car allows you to make stops along the way. There are no limits to the number of stops you can make, so this is a great option for those who want to see more of Italy along the way. The amount of time it takes to get to Lake Como will vary depending on how many stops you make along the way.
Plane
If you choose to fly, you will need to catch a flight to Milan and take either a train or a car to Lake Como. There are no direct flights to Lake Como.
Rome to Lake Como by Train
Taking a train from Rome to Lake Como is a convenient and scenic way to travel between these two destinations. The train takes you through the Italian countryside, which is absolutely beautiful.
Departure and Arrival
Trains to Lake Como typically depart from Roma Termini, Rome’s main railway station, and will arrive at Como San Giovannithe. You will make a stop at Milan Centrale. From here, you will need to take a regional train to get to Como San Giovannithe.
Frecciarossa and Frecciargento are the fastest trains that get you to Milan. When departing from Milan to Como San Giovannithe, you must take the regional train, Trenord.
Pricing
Pricing for train tickets varies. If you are looking for the best prices, I advise booking your tickets online and well in advance. If you’re up for a little pampering, something we all deserve every now and then, consider booking a first-class ticket. First Class tickets often provide more spacious seating and additional amenities. But booking the standard class ticket is just fine if you want to get there on the cheap.
Train Amenities
All trains, especially the high-speed trains, offer amenities such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, and dining services. Check the train details to see what is available.
Bringing along luggage? Trains are equipped with designated areas for luggage. Be mindful of any restrictions and consider packing light for ease of travel.
Regional Train Ticket Validation
Important advice….be certain to validate your regional ticket prior to boarding. (The train from Milan to Lake Como.) You do not want to have an unvalidated ticket after the train leaves the station and risk getting a hefty fine. To validate your ticket, there are machines that you will insert your ticket into that will stamp it with a date and time. Do this just prior to boarding. If you have an electronic ticket, it is automatically validated.
